Implementing Design and Operational Measures for Sustainable Mobility: Lessons from Zurich

Increasing mobility and urbanization is important for economic prosperity but leads to higher urban traffic congestion, which associated with many negative externalities. Therefore, cities are in need of integrative solutions that reduce their transportation network’s spatial environmental footprint, while maintaining the highest efficiency possible. Focusing on a nontraditional more sustainable cycle transportation, this paper covers an integrated perspective by describing combination individual design operational measures. To do so, case study city Zurich presented, consistently ranks highly across different indicators, from smart sustainability. This therefore qualitative review measures has implemented become sustainable. The compared indicators existing literature classify them into three clusters: (i) discouraging private motorized transport, (ii) encouraging public (iii) human-powered mobility. discussion thereof allows us integrate define cycle, potentially serves as best-practice example.
